Sun,
a banner of goodness.
the river of Dharma is rising,
nourishing Creation like a Mother’s milk.
I watch languidly from the banks of my flesh and senses,
eyes closed toward the inner terrain
bidding the Light to visit me there.

This
person humbly welcomes you to the first Yoga-Art-Writing newsletter
of its' sort! In the tempestuous overcoming of this last wintry
month of wind, chill, and transcendent California Sun overriding
it all, the Aquarius spirit -that great and ancient liberator
of knowledge- has gotten the best of me and has encouraged the
publishing of several new writings on Yoga on my website. In time
for Spring and the transition from Winter remnants of old to early
hints of budding, the theme of the Niyama
of Soucha
emerges to give a fresh perspective on what it means to practice
cleanliness, from it's practical sense in terms of being a good
steward of our body temples, towards a philosophy of liberating
the mind from the clutter of judgments and projections and the
shackles of likes and dislikes. I have also posted 20 chants
and their translations from the Sanskrit which are the basis for
the Vedic Chanting workshops I offer monthly. The noble Eight
Limbs of Yoga are given
in a simple form to help infuse your practice with an awareness
of the uncompromisingly universal, transformative and joyful stages
of development that Yogis from time immemorial have shared, as
first related through the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
May it be of benefit to all Beings!

Many
styles, one Yoga-
Yoga originated over 5,000 years ago, according to archaeologists'
findings on seals and pottery from the ancient Indus Valley river
civilization in northwest India/Pakistan. There, the earliest pictographs
of Surya Namaskaram, the Salute to the Sun, and evidence of the
worship of a chthonic, creative force connected intimately to the
elements and represented by symbols from nature emerged.
Around 250-500 BCE, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali were written, giving
a context for the comprehensive stages of Yoga practice as eight-limbed
Yoga: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana,
Samadhi. This Eight-Limbed Yoga is Ashtanga Yoga.
How did Yoga arrive in the West? (more...) |
Avoiding
Spiritual Materialism
There are now many diverse interpretations of what Yoga
is, especially here in America, where people have arrived at the
practice of Yoga largely through exposure to Asana, looking for
a way to relax and heal the body. The Asana practice of posture
can be taught in so many ways. There is the Vinyasa method of linkage
between movement and breath, popularized as "flow" or
"power" Yoga. In the method popularized by BKS Iyengar
there is a more contemplative physical practice with less instruction
on breathing, but with intricate concentration on alignment, engaging
longer holds in postures with little or no movement between postural
transitions. The Ashtanga Vinyasa school of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois
is a more vigorous but progressive, stage-oriented practice that
is derived from a text called the Yoga Korunta, which gives the
exact postures in order that is now known as the Primary, Secondary,
and Third Series. (more...) |

Study classical
Ashtanga Yoga
for one month in Rishikesh, India ~ September 17 - October 15
This year Phoenix and her teacher
Mataji will be leading a course in the complete practice and lifestyle
of Ashtanga (Eight Limbed) Yoga on the banks of the sacred Ganga
river at the lovely Parmarth Niketan Ashram. The daily schedule
includes morning sadhana- pranayama, chanting, and meditation,
then asana. The morning continues to unfold with special classes
given by Mataji in Vedic chanting and philosophy based on the
Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita. Phoenix teaches an afternoon asana
class, and twice a week there will be a special focus on healing
with in-depth explorations of subtle anatomy (the chakras, nadis,
koshas) and Ayurvedic wisdom for specific constitutional types
and their appropriate asanas and pranayamas.
Parmarth Niketan gives a certificate
upon completion of this 200+ hour course from the International
Yoga Heritage Foundation.
Note: For the sake of clarity in our jumbled bureaucratic times,
teachers and students who are interested in pursuing this course
with a certificate in mind should know that this is not a Yoga
Alliance accredited school. It is however, perhaps more highly
credentialled to give such certificates in their own right as
centuries-long holders of the living Yoga tradition, in any regard.
It is not possible to combine these hours for a 500-hour Yoga
Alliance certification.
Those who wish to join Phoenix's
guided tour of Rishikesh, Haridwar, Agra, and Delhi are encourage
to enroll concurrently with Phoenix by contacting her at garudayogini@yahoo.com
For more information on the
monthlong Yoga Intensive, please contact Parmarth Niketan Ashram
at info@parmarth.com or
visit Parmarth's
website.
